Finding Your True Colors

When you make that stellar last-minute goal, or save the day with some seriously fancy footwork, what do you want to look like? What colors will you wear?

It’s the kind of question that teams big and small ask themselves every time it’s time to choose a new uniform. And it can be a tough one to answer! After all, teams are often defined by their look (for proof of that, just look to Brazil’s national team, which we’ll forever associate with that unmistakably bright canary, or “canarinho,” yellow).

Colors can have an impact on the players themselves, too—if you have a strong connection to the color you sport, that emotion might just translate to equally passionate play on the field.

So… what do you choose? Read on for a few of our favorite ways to find the best colors for your club or team today.

Go with what you know

A natural starting-off point for picking your new team colors is, of course, the designs that already exist. For a country, that’s pretty easy—look to the flag! –but for youth leagues or school teams, you can pull from your school seal or similar places.

But don’t worry—reflecting your area colors doesn’t stop you from getting creative, too! Take Brazil, for example. As we mentioned earlier, the team is practically inseparable from its canary yellow team color, but it wasn’t always this way. In fact, yellow isn’t even the most prominent color on the country’s flag! It was chosen in 1953 by Aldyr Garcia Schlee, who decided that bright yellow simply looked better than green when paired with the team’s blue shorts. The rest, as they say, is history!

So, when it comes to choosing colors, opt for the unexpected, or rework tried-and-true colors in new and novel ways. You never know what can happen!

Pull from your local environment

Another great option is to pull from your local environment. This is a smart solution for those starting their own team or joining a local league, for which there is no predetermined color or imagery available. If you live in a coastal environment known for its beautiful beaches and waterways, why not opt for a true-blue design that reflects the beauty of the ocean? Or if your region is famous for its gorgeous sunsets, purple and orange make a vivid combination. These, of course, are just a few options to consider. Embodying your locale through your soccer uniform can give your crew some true character—a sense of place and personality, no matter who you’re up against.

Put psychology on your side

When deciding on team colors, you can also try putting psychology on your side for that competitive edge. Color psychology says that we often associate red and black with boldness of character, for example, so those might be wise choices for conveying your team’s powerful personality. Maybe, on the other hand, you want your crew to be known for its incomparable speed or agility—a bright, flashy yellow or electric green might do the trick!

A few helpful tips…

No matter what color you choose, here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind along the way:

- Readability: Keep text color in mind as you make your decision, so that your jersey text can be read against the overall color. Blue, red or black with white make tried-and-true combinations, while yellow on white might prove to be a little tougher to read.

- Uniqueness: What makes your color stand out from your competition? Opt for something memorable and truly unique, to make impressions on the field that last and last.
